We ’re visiting laurels - gain garden designerJay Sifford ’s home garden today . We ’ve visited it before in other seasons , but today he ’s sharing how it calculate in wintertime .

I plan my garden call Rhodwood , which is nestled in a North Carolina batch valley , during the COVID epidemic . Frankly , it was invaluable in avail me through that period of clip . The front garden is astylized meadowbuilt atop the septic drainpipe field . Designing it forfour - season interestwas a gamy priority for me , since the winters here can be farsighted and coarse . Here are some photos that were taken during the months that we normally consider to be disconsolate and exanimate when it comes to our gardens .

This pic , taken on a mid - Octobermorning , shows the waning garden bow to a striking autumnal sunrise that play up the mountain across the route .

Silvery systema skeletale of Russian sage(Salviayangii , Zones 5–9 ) move as jewelry in the winter garden as they glint in the afternoon sunlight .

Yellow twigdogwoods(Cornussericea‘Flaviramea ’ Zones 3–8 ) and a coral barque maple(Acerpalmatum‘Sango - kaku ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , which was decapitate by a falling tree diagram limb , add excitement to the winter garden .

This snow - coveredErica‘Kramer ’s Red ’ ( Zones 5–8 ) remind me of a bowl of vanilla glass emollient top with raspberry .

Out by the route , winter interest catch the eyes of passersby . ‘Kramer ’s Red ’ erica , Cedrusatlantica‘Blue Cascade ’ ( geographical zone 6–9 ) , andJuniperusconferta‘Golden Pacific ’ ( Zones 6–9 ) shine on a dreary winter day . From a design stand , first belief are everything .

This view , take from my living room windowpane , shows the scrim effect of theCalamagrostis× acutiflora‘Karl Foerster ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) seed head that I ’ve plant as part of myfoundation planting .

Here ’s a last - up of the samevignette . Conifers , heaths , heathers , and a dwarf balsam fir(Abies balsamea , Zones 3–6 ) put on a show throughout the wintertime .

wry flower heads of theseHydrangea paniculata‘Phantom ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) add so much to the wintertime landscape painting . I entrust them in stead until April 1 , when I thin out the plant to within 12 inches of the ground , much like you ’d burn back roses . Doing so stay fresh these at a summer height of 5 feet , rather than 8 to 9 invertebrate foot . A large size of it would overwhelm the garden .
