Great plants for the colder months
We ’re visit with Bonnie Plikaytis in north Georgia today .
One of the most difficult design feature for me to action in my Zone 7 timberland garden is to comprise winter involvement . After 10 year of horticulture , I have determine a few things , which I share with you today .
In our woodland community of interests in North Georgia there are many evergreen tree and bush native to the property , including batch laurel(Kalmia latifolia , Zones 4–9 ) , American holly(Ilex opaca , Zones 5–9 ) , and a change of species of pine Tree . In the areas of the belongings that were cleared during building of our home , I have planted a variety of evergreen plant that tend to be cervid patient of to leave a backdrop for the deciduous Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and perennials in the garden .

Low - grow Japanese plum tree yew(Cephalotaxus harringtonia , Zones 5–9 ) and ‘ Savannah ’ holly(Ilex‘Savannah ’ , Zones 7–9 ) , with its promising red winter berry , frame this dormant Japanese maple(Acer palmatum , Zones 5–9 ) . The magnanimous garden boulder in front provides additional pastime with its lifelike Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe .
Evergreen low - growing plants are a real treasure . This variegatedRohdea japonica‘Piccadilly Pace ’ ( Zones 6–10 ) attracts extra attention with its variegated leaves and red Chuck Berry .
During summertime and fall , the perennials and different varieties and size of Japanese maple that draw this garden path are the star . However , in wintertime and ricochet the fearless anise(Illicium parviflorum , Zones 6–9 ) , anise(Illicium floridanum‘Swamp Hobbit ’ , Zones 7–10 ) , and several varieties of rhododendron predominate supreme with their evergreen broadleaf structure and former spring blooms .

Dwarf sweet flag(Acorus gramineus , Zones 6–9 ) is a grasslike ground cover that is evergreen in Zone 7 . In this photo it is mate with ‘ Autumn Bride ’ heuchera(Heuchera villosa‘Autumn Bride ’ , Zones 3–8 ) and champion Sir Henry Wood fern(Dryopteris championii , Zones 5–8 ) to frame a dormant dwarf Japanese maple . Garden boulders provide year - bout pastime with no scourge of deer wrong !
Siebold ’s wood fern(Dryopteris sieboldii , Zones 6–9 ) with its unusual shaped , leathery frond almost attend tropical . As with most evergreen ferns the fronds do lean to look tatterdemalion in spring and should be trimmed .
This stumpery build in the fall of 2018 always attracts the attention of those see the garden . The evergreen ferns really stand out in wintertime . The evergreen ferns in the stumpery include shaggy shield(Dryopteris cycadina , zone 5–8 ) , champion woodwind fern(Dryopteris championii , zona 5–8 ) , fall fern(Dryopteris erythrosora , Zones 5–8 ) , severe shield fern(Polystichum aculeatum , zone 3–8 ) , and East Indian holly fern(Arachnoides simplicior , Zones 7–9 ) .

Winter daphne(Daphne odora , Zones 7–9 ) , though somewhat temperamental , is well deserving its prima donna position . The motley glossy leaf and drear pink flush buds in winter are arresting . In February it blooms , and the perfumed fragrancy is intoxicating .
Evergreen Solomon ’s seal is an uncommon evergreen land top . It diffuse by rhizomes to form glob but is not aggressive in the garden . As a bonus it blooms in May , producing white 3/4 - inch tubelike chime - forge flowers . The thud in this photograph turn back bothDisporopsis pernyi(Zones 6–9 ) , which has lance - shaped parting andDisporopsis arisanensis(Zones 6–9 ) , which has rounded leave of absence . sturdy begonia(Begonia grandis , zona 6–9 ) seedpod are glisten in the sunlight in the background .
Sometimes winter involvement does n’t come from an evergreen plant at all . The dark-skinned burgundy colour of the large leaves of this oakleaf hydrangea(Hydrangea quercifolia‘Ruby Slippers ’ , Zones 5–9 ) sure enough holds one ’s attention . ( Note that this shrub has grow much larger than the predicted sizing ! ) The picture shows a Southgate ® Grace ™ rhododendron ( zone 6–9 ) in the foreground and a Japanese plum tree yew(Cephalotaxus harringtonia , Zones 5–9 ) to the side .

Our belongings borders a paved hike track . My gardening familiar , Cody , is checking to see if any of his eyetooth buddies are heading down the track to his water bar .
We hope that you line up serenity in the beauty of our wintertime garden .
