Viewer Garden Discoveries in Quarantine
We seem to be hit a pattern the past few springs : tranquillise by pelting and unusually cool temperatures , summertime suddenly border a loud wakeup call . To my surprise , test works hydrangeas sent to me two years ago in a sweaty hot May take Central Texas in tread , as long as sheltered in specter with morning light . These are Endless Summer ® ‘ Summer Crush ’ , one of five in the compact - maturation accumulation . I did n’t risk a reason test in my with child soil , so I pot them in good well - enfeeble soil . Meagan Pike in Hutto report achiever in the ground , shade by a tree . Hers front like Twist - n - Shout ® , but I ca n’t confirm . So far , they ’ve been frigid hardy for us both , though they miss their leaves in wintertime . Since mine are in containers , I do fetch them close to the house . After we both lightly trim in recent February / March , they bounced back attractively . Apparently they bloom on both older and new wood . This week , I push mine back farther into subtlety . I water deeply about once a hebdomad , though once we ’re in the 100s , they get a second deep drench if needed . A pineapple plant guava game this spot , separating it from the fly-by-night fencing garden flight strip . Another chance I take is with a works I found at local glasshouse a few years ago : Hardy white gloxinia ( Sinningia tubiflora ) . This tuberous perennial from Argentina and Uruguay disappears in winter . Nearby , ego - seeding nativeGeum canadenseremains evergreen . And the floppy leaves are browning Byzantine gladiolus that I had n’t cut back yet . In late fountain , it pops back up , gracing a very dry part subtlety bed with fuzzy - leaved ground cover . This year it bloom for the first time ! I hope that splendid tube pull a hummingbird . It ’s not even officially summertime yet ( June 20 ) , but already I ’m eager for fall . So are my beautyberries , also in part to mottled shade , including Mexican beautyberry ( Callicarpa acuminata ) . Since they ’re prepping fall fruit — from lavender to deep purpleness — I’m starting to give them weekly cryptic lacrimation . This workweek , CTG presents a very special video ! When viewers shuttered at home in March , they e-mail their stories , pictures , and video about how they regain solace , wonder , and an worked up break in their gardens during Covid-19 quarantine . After I pile up late March to other April compliance , Daphne recorded the script on her back porch with Augie ’s little “ sis . ” Behind her , lead jasmine still flowers on its evergreen plant cover . I edited on my kitchen table improvised office , and believe me , we faced a few working at family challenges!Still , this is rightfully heartwarming and I dear give thanks everyone who shared their thoughts and discoveries . I ’m already work on the next one . Take a look !
