It was June and I was stuck in Denver . Well , not stuck , but delay at the airport trying to get home and mindlessly scrolling through all the photos I ’d taken on my holiday . Cool plant with reddish flowers just off the hiking path , cool plant with odd hair adhere to the root of a tree diagram , cool flora in the parking lot of the hotel — perhaps a yucca of some variety ? “ Did you take any pictures of the passel ? ” my husband ask .
One of my last vacations was to Colorado , and despite the hiccups , it was a great trip . I never thought I ’d long for a three - hr stop , but given the travel restrictions this preceding twelvemonth , I ’d blithely camp out in Denver International Airport correctly now .
The days were ardent , the nights were cool , and it did n’t rain once during our week of tramp . surely , the snowy efflorescence were impressive to a womb-to-tomb East Coaster like me , but it was the plant life that really drive me excited . My travelling companion clearly matte differently . I never dreamed that any of those ground covers clinging to the incline of cliffs could be happy — or even thrive — in my Connecticut gardens . After readingGreat Native Plants from the Westthough , I clear I was wrong . As horticulturist Panayoti Kelaidis guide out , many of the condition we find in our own backyards mime the native environs of these plant life . And several of these westerly indigen make splendid substitutions for well - make out nonnative metal money .

I ’m confident that we ’ll get back to normal travel someday soon . And when we do , I wo n’t be taking any few pictures of the plants I see — peculiarly since I now sleep together many of those plants might find a suitable home base … back at my dwelling .
