SixOnSaturday

Here in the UK we have a 4 24-hour interval weekend over Easter , always a welcome recess and usually my first time off work since the Christmas intermission . I require a dyad of extra days so effectively had a 6 daytime weekend , the good kind . I had braggy plans to fetch up the decorate indoors , but the conditions was really good and I decided I ’d rather expend it in the garden . Having wipe out everything I grew last year , and having vow not to turn anything from semen this yr , I chance I am miss works to fill gaps in the borders . A fleet but eye - wateringly expensive sojourn to the garden centre purpose that issue and I spent a good part of my break weeding and planting . Hopefully I will see the fruits of that over the summer . I still have interruption , but I have some dahlias coming into growth , and I may break my vow and sow in some cosmos , I ’m not sure I can bring myself to expend a fate on annuals .

1 – Tulip ‘ Slawa ’ . Another “ in the soil ” group , they have live a few yr now but are gradually deoxidize in bit , there are about one-half leave this yr .

2 – Wisteria sadness . I was a scrap optimistic the other week when I confidently predicted a in effect wisteria year . No such fortune , unfortunately , the one hard frost we ’ve had in recent weeks was sufficient to put the mockers on it for this year . This allow me with just the annoyance of deal with the rearing outgrowth with no payoff to make it deserving my while . Sigh .

3 – Lupin . Among the plant I buy last weekend were three lupins . I wish lupins , but so do the slugs and snails , so this may be the very definition of an exercise in futility . I am promising they are bountiful enough to survive some munching and that they will at least blossom this year , even if they get mown to the ground next year on emerge .

4 – Cornus ‘ Midwinter Fire ’ . This shrub is a few years old , mature from an offset give to me by a neighbour . It grew enough last year for me to conceive pass on it its first hard prune . I take the plunge a few weeks ago , and after pout for a bit , doing a idle marijuana cigarette impression , it is now burst forth with new growth . Hopefully this will grow vigorously and be nice and colorful this wintertime .

5 – Fern , old and young . Among the Job I did not get done last weekend was dress the old growth away from these hart ’s tongue ferns . They attend scruffy as a effect , I shall tackle them this weekend . likely .

6 – Tulip ‘ Palestrina ’ [ check name ] Rather similar in the end to last calendar week ’s ‘ Sunrise Dynasty ’ , they are endearing nevertheless .

Have a first-rate weekend in the garden , if you’re able to .
