Rose History (cont): The Rose Gets Fussy

This is another in a serial publication of posts on roseate history . Besides being interesting , rose history can also help you understand how to utilize and wish for roses in your garden , particularly that they have not always been “ fussy ” !

While still pop in the early part of the 20th century , rise develop no longer was set against the backcloth of the leisure time of the prim Era . Two wars , a depression , and the movement to the metropolis meant that attention was elsewhere .

However , after World War II , the United States in special entered an era of unprecedented prosperity . The Marshall Plan mean that Europeans , too , would join in , although it would take longer . In addition , chemicals were suddenly tawdry , popular , and naively considered good to use . The vision ofLeave It to Beaver , with mother June Cleaver tending roses in her bird , pearls , and coiffed hair had arrived .

Hybrid teas were the madness , and the flower form of the Peace rose go under the standard to be built upon . tatty chemicals mean that disease resistance was not an issue . Many kinsperson had only one working parent , the soccer mom had yet to arrive on the scenery , and home in the suburbs meant blank for gardening .

The demand was for luxuriously - rivet intercrossed tea on long stem , and the rose diligence complied . Fragrance began to mislay importance , as did disease resistance and energy . Why worry about those when you could hop down to your local hardware store and buy DDT ! configuration was everything . Many rose really meant for the cut efflorescence / expo market were sell as garden blush wine , which for the most part they were not .

Slowly but surely in the United States , rose went from being rugged shrubs to spoil garden prima donna corraled behind a boxwood hedge .

But meanwhile in Europe . . .
