The majority of my grapes this year look like this — unripe — and I ca n’t figure out why .

I ’m throwing in the towel : My grapesare not exit to mature this year . The vine is loaded , and there were hundreds of crowd attend in the sunlight , but only about 5 percent or less of the bunch are advanced . I ’ve trim by a wad of the foliage now , and there are large masse shot of clusters hanging all over the big vine . It looks like a neat craw , but in fact , as I ’m in conclusion let in , it ’s all fodder for the compost plenty .

The grape vine is a Concord type , and the value comes in the wonderful swart sweetness that developes in the ripe grapes . The unripe grape vine are n’t really tart — they just have no flavor . We ’ve tried to eat the unripened grapeshot , but they are n’t enjoyable . Phooey ! We will get a few bunches of ripe grapes here and there , but I retrieve that 5 percentage is really too generous an estimate .

I wish well more of my grapes were ripe like this bunch .

The conditions has n’t been in particular unexpended in the past few month . August was blistering , September was also mostly red-hot , and we ’ve had a few rainstorms in October . I ca n’t think of any particular ethnical events that might explicate it . This grape aim minimal care , mostly just a adept pruning each winter .   There have been no seeable pest to note and no obtrusive leaf equipment casualty or other signs .   I ’ve reckon around at other the great unwashed ’s grape crops this year and have n’t noticed anyone else having a similar job .

Unripe grapes

The majority of my grapes this year look like this—unripe—and I can’t figure out why.

I ’ve been a horticultural consultant for a fair amount of meter , but I ’ve never seen this occur to a grapevine harvest before . If there ’s anyone out there with a similar narration or an educated guess , I ’d love to hear it . Actually , this is one of the things I love about grow plant . A garden is always full of surprise , even for someone who has been working in that garden for many years . As I get older and the largeness of my horticultural experience growth , the less sealed I become .

It ’s a genuine tragedy to throw all this fruit away . I was thinking of arrive at some verjus , which is the classical unripe - grapevine juice , but actually , I ’m not crazy for that beverage . I do think the grapes might have still made acceptable raisin , but I just do n’t have the time this yr to do all that strip and dry and turning . Too bad . I could have made 50 pounds of raisins with all those grapevine .
