Assorted rare plants from an Iowa garden

Gary Whittenbaugh gardens in Iowa , where he grow an astonishing chain of rare plants . Iowa can be a hard position to garden . With hot summer and cold wintertime , it is barely the temperate climate most of us aspiration of . But Gary makes horticulture in this climate look easy , and he definitely proves that you do n’t need to be in England or the Pacific Northwest to grow cool plants beautifully . Gary shared so many capital photos of his garden that we had to break them into two day . So make out back tomorrow for more of this great garden .

Puschkinialibanotica(Lebanon squill , Zones 4–9 ) . This was the first thing to flower in the garden this year . And what a way to start the gardening time of year !

Daphnemezereumf.alpinum(February daphne , Zones 4–7 ) . call the February daphne for its early bloom habit , this shrub does n’t blossom quite that former in Iowa , but it still is one of the first plant to flower . fantabulous drain is vital to keep this plant happy , as heavy , wet soils will cause it to rot and die .

Saxifraga‘Rose Marie ’ ( Zones 4–7 ) . This tiny little treasure for the rock garden needs good drainage , and when it ’s happy it rewards the gardener with this sheet of sweet pinkish flowers .

Draba aizoides(Zones 4–8 ) . Drabas are easy - plump little stone garden plants , set up out lots of yellow flowers very ahead of time in the spring .

Rhododendrondauricum‘RCG Purple ’ ( geographical zone 5–8 ) . This small rhododendron makes a stocky shrub that is evergreen in warm mood and drop its leafage if it gets too cold . Rhododendronmucronulatum‘Mahogany Red ’ ( Korean rhododedron , Zones 4–7 ) is an unusual deciduous rhododendron , and one of the early florescence species .

Daphnevelenovskyi‘Rubicon ’ ( zone 5–7 ) . This tiny evergreen shrub is aboriginal to the passel of Bulgaria , where is sails through coarse , irregular , and rapidly alter atmospheric condition . In spring , it covers itself with these pinkish , fragrant flowers . Like all daphnes , it needs perfect drainage to dwell a long and happy aliveness .

Daphnevelenovskyi‘Old Port ’ ( Zones 5–7 ) . This natural selection is a little prominent and faster growing than the usual species , and just as beautiful .
