Getting Started

If you live in a cold climate that gets wintertime freezes , you will want to do a few thing to keep your pond , Pisces the Fishes , and plants safe during the colder months .

I live in southwest Ontario , Canada where wintertime temperatures can dip to around -20 ° C ( -5 ° F ) with median lows of around -10 ° C ( 14 ° degree Fahrenheit ) . My pond would freeze solid and the Pisces would not survive without following the tips below .

If you are in hardiness zone 4 to 8 in places like Ontario , New York , and the Midwest , you will in all probability have experimental condition alike to mine .

When I work up my first pool , I kept hearing that there was no way I could keep the ( cold - piddle ) fish animated ( and happy ) all year - circle in a cold climate in a pond that was less than 2 - foot inscrutable . gratefully , that was not correct .

It does n’t count how deep the pool is , it just matters that the water is moving and not frozen .

As long as thewater is circulatingand there is anair hole(if glass forms ) to allow oxygen   in and gases out , fish and plants should be all right .

The colder it gets , the wearisome the Pisces the Fishes will be . On the cold days they will breathe low down in the pond , basically hibernating until thing warm up .

While you may keep a shallow pool safe all winter , the advantage to a deeper pond is the body of water near the bottom is less likely to freeze down , even without a ticker running . Plus the extra deepness gives the fish a place to pillow far from the hand of hungry marauder like raccoons .

But , a shallow pool will ferment too . As said , I ’m here in Canada and have taken care of several ponds that are just two - feet mystifying ( or a bit less ) and so long as I keep the water moving with a recirculating heart , the fish are fine .

The fish we ’re talking about arecold - water system fishsuch asgoldfish , shubunkins , andkoi . You would not keep tropical Pisces the Fishes in a garden pond in a cold mood .

If you are in a much cold clime than I am , I ’m imagine it would take quite a lot of power ( energy ) to keep a large pool go throughout the winter , but it does not take much in a moderate cold clime like mine .

I apply both arecirculating pond pumpand   afloating de - icer(to forbid the surface from icing over ) . I ’ve explain more ( below ) .

No . If your pool is cover , it could preclude or impair the release of potentially hazardous gases from within the water — flatulence that can pop the fish . That ’s also why we do not countenance the pond ice over . You want to ensure the H2O has drift ( by maintain a recirculating ticker running ) and check that your fish always have access to sweet aviation .

I acknowledge pond companies commend a pile of additional products ( chemical substance , aerate pool carbon , beneficial bacteria , and accessary like covers ) but I have never used any of these things in my twenty years of pond care so I have no recommendations to offer .
