Magical planting design

Amy Birdsong is taking us along to this beautiful garden today .

My married man and I moved our young back to college in Winston - Salem , North Carolina , this weekend and stick overnight so we could visitReynolda Gardens . This space was designed and build in the early 1900s by the Reynolds family , and much of the layout and concept remain the same to this day . The garden is disunite into two large segment by a serial of “ teahouses ” that provide interesting viewing angles and viewpoints to play off of . The front one-half holds four parterres , each with its own color scheme . The ikon in the main show the pink and white parquet circle and the blue and yellowish parquet circle , which are holding up the best in this hot , end - of - summertime time . How the plantings are interwoven to hide the messy or tatterdemalion bottoms of the efflorescence plants is inspiring , and they mingle to make a tapestry . Another design element that has a firm impingement isgladiolusused as punctuation mark marks , which are mixed in among more flowy plant . What is most impressive about these courtly gardens , though , is that almost all of the flowers and plant are fairly uncouth , even to a novice like me . Zinnias , phlox , hydrangeas , cleome , roses , impatiens , black - eyed Susans , salvias , iris diaphragm , lilies , and butterfly bush are varieties you see at your local nursery , but the way they are mixed here is wizardly .

The garden tearoom give beautiful complex body part to the garden .

The garden intention is formal , with straight , square - cornered layer that give structure to the informal planting within .

Pink cleome ( Cleomehassleriana , one-year ) and Japanese anemones ( Anemonehupehensis , Zones 4–8 ) bloom in the foreground , with purplebutterfly bush(Buddleiahybrid , Zones 5–9 ) in the ground .

Gladiolusmurielae(Zones 6–10 ) give strongverticalstructure to the garden . This coinage of sword lily is quite dissimilar from the intimate hybrids , with an elegant presence in the late - summertime garden and a wonderfulfragrance , especially in the evening .
