Well   here it is in former December and not amazingly , most of the external crop in themaingarden , ‘ bit the dust ’ as they say — become flat . A few are still live . It is warm now — here are the result of those dusty snatch we had .

Toscano Kale

The Toscana ( aka Lacinato or dinosaur ) kale got severely damaged . It is cold sore and although it ’s not completely deadened , it is unharvestable . Here it is with the leafage burned from the cold .

Russian Red kale

The Russian Red and Curly Leaf kale are still go and have some damage as well but the new ontogeny is doing well . I have n’t water them at all - nature has with a footling snow and a decent rain the other day- almost an inch . I do have them covered with 2 layers of winter weightiness wrangle top .

The gourds are still drying in the field . Some are starting to get lighter in weight so I will put those in the garden shed to finish dry out . The sleep will stay alfresco until they dry more .

The Toscano Kale with freeze burn. It is more sensitive to cold temperatures than other kales

The immature house is release up fair close now with just a niggling venting at the top instrument panel . I ’ve put the house of cards wrap on all the windows ( bubble faced to the windowpane ) for extra insulation . I ’ve also put the 4 barrel with body of water in them on the north rampart for them to imbibe heat in the daylight ( I hire them out during the summertime ) , unloosen the heat at night ( the theory is that the sun which is low and further to the south will off them on the north wall and warm up up in the daytime ) . I ’m not sure I have enough barrels to do much right but even one grade will be helpful once it get inhuman again .

I ’ve institute 2 wintertime dinero varieties in the green house as transplants back in former November . The cold gruelling varieties are a gullible variety show - Winter Wunder and a flushed assortment - Marshall Red Romaine . They both have made it so far through those cold snaps although they have slow down down in growth because of the shorter daytime hours . They will cease grow until sometime in January when the daylight 60 minutes get to get long .   Winter Wunder is my favorite lettuce but only originate well during the cold months . When it starts to get even a little lovesome , it will bolt . The simoleons have 2 layer of quarrel cover charge over them at dark and have some trade protection from the unwarmed greenhouse ( at least from the idle words ) . I ’ve also noticed that the clams do n’t need a pot of water supply now ( about once every 2 weeks ) . It will be interesting to see if they make it Dec - February . Do n’t they look terrific in the winter !

There has been about a 4 - 7 ° farad difference between the greenhouse temperature and the outside temperature at 7 am in the good morning when I mark everything . When I impart the row cover at Nox I get about 4 - 6 degrees more protection . I ’m not sure what to expect this wintertime since this is my first December - January   in the greenhouse . Last year when we finish up the glasshouse I start plant on February 17th so now I will see if these established special K can survive Dec - Jan.
