There are many wonderful volaille breeds for farm - fresh bollock .

We ’ve been keeping egg - put chicken for a few year now and we ’ve had experience with many breeds . We ’ve kept both the intercrossed layers , that lay A LOT of eggs a year , to the dual - intent breeds . We ’ve also keptchickens that lie in fun blue eggsthat our kidskin really enjoy .

What are the Best Egg Laying Chickens?

There ’s one important enquiry you need to expect other than ‘ how many testis per year ’ when it comes to choosing chicken breeds .

thing like your climate , where you keep your chicken , what you plan on doing with them after they ’re done laying in 2 - 5 years and what your poulet keeping goals are . It also depends on if you want heritage breed or intercrossed and whether or not you want broodiness ( when chickens sit on the eggs to ‘ concoct ’ them , which if you are n’t hatching your own chicks or want to grab eggs without let pecked at , is something to consider ) .

If you have kids friendliness will also be a factor .

Best Chickens for Egg Laying

The following chicken breed that lie in anywhere from 200 - 350 eggs per class . I ’ll review the pro and cons from experience of each of the surveil top orchis lay hens :

Some other fantastic layers let in Rhode Island Red but we ’ve never kept them as * patently * they have a red-hot disposition they are n’t as friendly with shaver . Other great layer include Australops or Golden Comet .

Lotsa Chickens eggs 280+/year

Leghorns, ISA Browns, Lohman Lite

The chicken breeds that are ball - producing machine can sometimes go tapering off egg laying at 2.5 years . We actually noticed a drop in our ISA John Brown at 2 years and it happened quickly . This means while these breeds will offer a logarithm of eggs for a brace of long time , you might not keep them as long .

Out of all our big ball producing wimp breed , the ISA brownness were opt over the leghorns & Lohman Lites .

They had a friendlier nature and had a * little * more kernel on them . They also seemed less flyaway and more friendly towards humans .

Barred Rock Chick- Great dual purpose chicken breed

Barred Rock Chick- Great dual purpose chicken breed

Chicken breed that dwell 280 + ballock a year often skinnier offering less ‘ centre ’ if any at all , mostly intend for the wimp stock if you project on culling them .

One bang-up matter about hens that are prolific layers is that they be less to feed because they ’re slimmer .

seemingly Panama are think to be quite flighty , however we did n’t experience that .   Our leghorns , which were brown / black , unfortunately meet the demise of a black bear ( who ripped the plyboard right off of the poulet henhouse ) so we did n’t get to experience these hens for long than a yr . We presently have 5 Lohman lite which are Brobdingnagian producers of eggs , but super skinny & flighty . We did n’t get them as doll , we corrupt them as pullets and we noticed a immense difference in friendliness towards humans .

Review of chicken breeds for lots of eggs

Chicken breeds that lay 250+ eggs per year

Here are some large breeds that lay corking but are also more double - purpose rather than just for eggs . Some of these breeds are cold hardy too- the Sussex & Barred Rock .

I think so far this is my fav chicken stock !

They dwell lots of eggs , have quite a lot of meat on their bones & are extremely friendly . In fact , even though they are enceinte chicken I ’m so impound to the 1 we have I might just have to let these little girl retire . This is a corking double purpose & cold hardy breed for those area with snow-covered winters .

Best chicken breeds for farm fresh eggs

Speckled Sussex – 250 eggs/year

This breed is super friendly and funny . Another cracking threefold purpose cold hardy stock .

We have a speckled Sussex but they come in other colors . The next year we got 3 light Sussex chickens ( which I sleep with )

Ameraucana & Easter Eggers – 250 eggs/year

Ameracauna   lays gloomy eggs and have fluffy cheek . Easter Eggers can consist grim / green eggs . I talk aboutchickens that dwell blue eggsin this post .

Our Ameracauna crosses have been our most troublesome hen to date .

Although we got them as chicks , they had less handling , but they also did n’t need to be caught OR held . While our bar stone , wyandotte & bespeckle sussex chicks were okay being cuddled by the kids , these chicks were not having it at all .

ISA brown

They did n’t even want to log Z’s inside the chicken cage , favor the cerise tree out of doors .

As we had a drouth all summer and it scarcely rained for month so they got role to sleeping in the tree diagram . It took a lot of win over for them to bide inside the fence area and not fly out ( 8 foundation fence ) to kip in the tree . Once we direct them to sleep inside as the weather began to get cold , we still have one that is break away EVERY . SINGLE . DAY .

She fly on top of the poulet coop ( about 12 feet up ) and flies over the other side .

Brown Leghorns

I know we could trim their wings so that they do n’t fly forth , but so far we ’re letting them be .

Even though I love get blue orchis , I ’m not certain this breed & it ’s personality suit our homestead .

Wyandotte- 200 eggs/year

This is the ‘ diva ’ of the chicken world . They ’re pretty & they know it .

They ’re often more outspoken and queen of the lot . We ’ve only every had one wyandotte as they do n’t lay as many eggs but I would have to agree with that verbal description . She has a very cunning ‘ clucking ’ noise she makes

That reason out my review of the poulet breeds we ’ve had the most experience with .

Barred rock chickens

If I had to prefer ONE strain I ’d foot the barred rock .

I favor having a mixed flock though , it ’s overnice to get a bite of both worlds !

The breeds that pose a lot of ballock to the dual intention ones that lay for longer period and are meatier towards the culling ages .

Barred Rock/Plymouth Rock is an excellent dual purpose backyard chicken breed
